What is dropshipping?
Dropshipping is a business model that allows entrepreneurs to launch an online business and sell products to their customers without ever actually stocking the items themselves. Instead, when a drop-shipping store sells a product, it buys the product from a third party and the product is delivered straightly to the customer. In simpler terms, this is way the dropshipping works:
- The customer make order for a product on the retailer’s website.
- The retailer automatically or manually forwards the order and customer details to the dropship provider.
- The drop-ship provider packages and deliver the order straightly to the customer in the retailer’s name.

How to start dropshipping successfully with Shopify?
Step 1: Register for a Shopify Account
The most obvious beginning to any website, create an account on Shopify and select a free trial to get started. All you need is an email address to confirm your account. No credit card or other payment method form is needed. Once that’s done, Shopify will need your name and other information details for the handling of payments. It’s a short form to fill so don’t worry too much about that.
Step 2: Choose and upload your Shopify theme
Once you have registered, you will be directed to the Shopify dashboard where all your operations will happen. To maximize your sales, your website needs to combine attractiveness with usability and speed.
Shopify provides free pre-designed theme that you can use. If you have the budget, you can also search their marketplace for more templates options.
Step 3: Register a Domain Name
It’s time to select a domain name. When you register your account at the first time, by default, the domain will be YOURSTORENAME.myshopify.com. You’ll need to remove the “myshopify” before it ever goes live. On the left side column under “Online Store”, you click on “Domains”.There are two options for you to choose:
- Purchase a new domain through Shopify ($14 a year)
- Associate an existing domain from a third-party domain name registrar.
My suggestion if you’re creating a drop shipping store on Shopify is to purchase a domain name through Shopify. Not only is $14 a year a good price compared to other options, but this option is what’s easiest.
Step 4: Install Dropshipping Apps
For beginners , Shopify can be a one-stop resource. The first step you’ll need to do is head over to Shopify Apps. First click on Apps and then choose ‘Visit the Shopify App Store’. Once you’re there, do a search for ‘Oblero’. Oberlo is a dropshipping platform that will offers you to simply search for and include dropshipping products to your online store.
Step 5: Generate product collections
In your drop shipping store, you need to add the products into collections to make it easier for shopper find what they are looking for. To generate categories for your drop shipping store, head to your dashboard and find “Collections” listed on the left under “Products”. Choose the “Create Collection” button on the right side.
Step 6: Upload your product
If you already have suppliers and .CSVs sheets of their products, then you’ll want to easily import them. However, if you’re waiting to call providers until after your website is created, then you’ll need to add in some demo products. You’ll need three crucial pieces of information about each product:
- Product Name
- Product Description
- Vendor (Brand)
Because you already have your collections set up, you can select a product type under organization
Step 7: Setting up Payments
To set up payments, click on the ‘Settings’ on in your dashboard and select ‘Payment Providers’. By default, PayPal is the enabled method, so you can either customize your account details there or select other payment processors by region. Some payment processors like MOLpay will require a existing account with them to use them on your Shopify store. Even PayPal will ask that you have a merchant account, but they will email you details of that later on.
Shopify provides so much value to drop shipping business that there really isn’t anything to complain about in their pricing structure. Besides, Shopify has simplified so many things that nearly anyone can work with their system. As long as you have some idea about the products and are willing to spend some time on research, it’s easily to succeed on this powerful platform.
